My name is Atsa Yazzie, and I am an artist and cultural keeper of the Diné (Navajo) people. Although I create across various mediums, the heart of my artistic journey lies in reviving our traditional weaving, a sacred craft that once touched nearly every part of our ancestors’ daily lives. As a younger generation bearer of this tradition, my mission is to bring this sustainable and sacred art back to our community, using each weaving to tell empowering stories and to help us reconnect more deeply with our land and our culture.

When I look at the patterns woven into it, I see the same shapes my grandmother used to bead onto her regalia. The sacred symbols, the sun lines, the mountain shapes, these are the memories our elders passed down long before any of us were born.
Each color has a meaning. Red for our bloodline, for strength and protection. Blue for the sky where our prayers rise. Earth-tones for the land that raised us. These designs aren’t just decoration, they are pieces of our identity.
Growing up, blankets like this were always present in our homes. They wrapped our newborns, covered our dancers before ceremonies, and rested on the shoulders of those we honored. To us, a blanket is not simply a blanket. It is a gift of warmth, respect, and connection.
So when someone brings a Native-inspired blanket into their home, they’re not just choosing art. They’re inviting in a piece of our history, a reminder of who we are, where we come from, and the traditions that still breathe through us today.
